Successeur du prophète Élie, fils de Shafath, riche propriétaire d'Abel-Mehola, appelé du labour par Élie qu'il suivit comme serviteur avant de recevoir son manteau et une double part de son esprit prophétique. Son activité, politique autant que privée, marqua le royaume d'Israël : il sauva l'armée israélite lors de l'expédition contre Mécha, roi de Moab, déjoua la stratégie du roi de Syrie, prédit la levée du siège de Samarie, annonça à Hazaël son accession au trône, fit oindre Jéhu roi et, sur son lit de mort, prédit à Joas sa victoire sur les Syriens.
