Elijah Be'er B. Shabbethai

Italian physician born in Germany at the end of the 14th century, established in Italy, where the Senate granted him citizenship in Viterbe and then, in 1405, in Rome, confirmed by Pope Innocent VII on February 6, 1406; exempted from tolls, corvées and wearing the distinctive Jewish sign, he was authorized to carry weapons. Private physician to Pope Martin V, he retained this post under Eugene IV, who confirmed his citizenship and pension in 1433, and signed in December 1443 an agreement between the pope and the Jews of Italy on their religious freedom.

Médecin italien ; né en Allemagne à la fin du quatorzième siècle. Il s'établit en Italie, où le Sénat lui accorda les droits de citoyen à Viterbe, et, en 1405, à Rome ; confirmé par le pape Innocent VII, le 6 février 1406. Il fut exempté de péage, de service forcé, et de porter le vêtement juif, et il lui fut permis de porter des armes. Le pape Martin V en fit son médecin particulier, position qu'il conserva sous le successeur de Martin, Eugène IV, qui (1433) confirma sa citoyenneté et sa pension. Élie figurait parmi ceux qui signèrent (déc., 1443) un accord entre le pape et les Juifs italiens concernant leur liberté religieuse.
