Issu d'une lignée de savants (père Samuel de Avila, grand-père Moïse ; oncle maternel Hayyim ibn Attar, le Or ha-Hayyim). Surnommé « Ner ha-Ma'aravi » (Lumière du Couchant), il laisse une œuvre halakhique importante, publiée en partie à titre posthume par son gendre.
