Romaniote Jew born in Constantinople, student of Élie ha-Lévi and Juda Minz of Padua. He succeeded Moïse Capsali as rabbinic leader (de facto Hakham Bashi) of the Jews of the Ottoman Empire. He is best known for his supercommentary on Rashi's Torah, in which he discusses almost every word and defends Rashi against the criticisms of Nahmanide. Also a mathematician, he composed a treatise on arithmetic and algebra.
