Rabbin russe né à Chaïkichok, dans le gouvernement de Grodno, en février 1817, mort à Bausk, en Courlande, le 11 décembre 1889. Marchand à Kovno, il se retira des affaires sur les conseils de son maître Kalischer pour se consacrer aux études rabbiniques, devint rabbin de Zezmer en 1852 puis, vers 1861, de Bausk, où il officia jusqu'à sa mort. Fervent partisan du mouvement sioniste, il autorisa les colons de Palestine à cultiver leurs champs pendant l'année de jachère, suscitant une controverse avec les rabbins de Palestine ; un seul de ses vingt-quatre ouvrages, « Terumat Yad » (Wilna, 1875), parut de son vivant.
