Born in Turin, trained at the Italian Rabbinical College of Florence (semikha 1912). Rabbi of the communities of Turin, Tripoli (1920–1923), Alexandria and Florence (1926–1934), then director of the Rabbinical College of Rome. Settled in Palestine in 1939, he was a major biblical scholar; his commentary on the Hebrew Bible enjoyed wide circulation in Israel. Elected to the Academy of the Hebrew Language in 1945. Buried in Jerusalem, where a street bears his name.
