Native of Constantinople, the most prolific author of original novels in Ladino (Judeo-Spanish), with dozens of novels and novellas (romansos). Founder and director in 1908 of the satirical periodical « El Jugueton » (איל ג'וגיטון), one of the most enduring of the Ladino press (1908-1931). He published in 1926 a picaresque autobiography, « Komo Nasio Elia R. Karmona ». His work is preserved notably in the Sephardic Studies Collection of the University of Washington.
