Tanna du IIe siècle, fils de Siméon b. Yoḥaï, dont il partagea la retraite dans une grotte pour échapper aux persécuteurs romains et s'y consacra à l'étude de la Torah. Devenu, contrairement à son père, fonctionnaire du gouvernement romain, il s'attira l'impopularité, se justifiant en disant qu'il ne faisait qu'arracher les chardons de la vigne ; plus tard rongé de remords, il s'imposa une pénitence sévère et, craignant qu'on ne lui refuse les honneurs funèbres, demanda à sa femme de garder son corps sous son toit après sa mort, survenue à Akbara, en haute Galilée.
