Violoniste, chef d'orchestre et compositeur, né à Düsseldorf le 13 juin 1824, mort à Boston le 18 janvier 1893. Formé notamment auprès de Reitz et Mendelssohn puis au Conservatoire de Bruxelles, où il obtint le premier prix de violon et de composition, il dirigea une troupe d'opéra à Genève avant de s'installer, en 1857, à New York puis à Boston, où il devint directeur musical du Museum ; il y composa l'opérette « The Doctor of Alcantara », toujours jouée en Amérique, et fonda le Boston Conservatory of Music.
