Pianiste allemand né à Berlin le 15 avril 1857, formé au piano avec Reinecke et à la composition avec Paul au Conservatoire de Leipzig. Professeur à l'institut musical de Kharkov jusqu'en 1880, puis au Conservatoire royal de Leipzig jusqu'en 1883, il obtint ensuite une chaire au Conservatoire de Cologne, devint en 1893 directeur du Liederkranz de Cologne puis, en 1896, premier professeur de piano au Conservatoire Stern de Berlin. Il se distingua par une technique brillante et une grande délicatesse de jeu.
