Compositeur, pianiste et critique musical allemand, né à Vienne le 5 octobre 1822, mort le 20 décembre 1899. Après des débuts à Bucarest et Jassy puis un poste de pianiste de cour auprès de Georges V de Hanovre, il vécut de 1855 à 1862 à Wiesbaden, en Angleterre puis à Francfort-sur-le-Main, avant de s'installer à Berlin comme professeur de piano au Conservatoire Stern et critique musical ; il reçut le titre de professeur en 1875. Auteur de nombreux ouvrages sur la musique, il se convertit au christianisme dans la seconde partie de sa vie.
