One of the founders of microbial genetics, long at Yale. Born in Cedarhurst (New York); his paternal grandfather Abraham Adelberg was a Russian Jewish immigrant, founder and first mayor of Cedarhurst; his maternal grandfather David Ehrlich was first cousin of Paul Ehrlich. In 1953 he discovered, with H. E. Umbarger, feedback inhibition. Author/co-author of reference manuals.
