Figure majeure du mouvement des Juifs soviétiques (refuzniks). Organisateur du projet de détournement d'avion de Leningrad (1970) pour fuir l'URSS ; condamné à mort, peine commuée en 15 ans de camp, libéré en 1979 lors d'un échange et émigré en Israël, où il dirigea le quotidien russophone Vesti. Il a tenu en prison des carnets sortis clandestinement et publiés.
