Organizer of the Leningrad hijacking scheme (1970) to flee the USSR; condemned to death, sentence commuted to 15 years in the camps, released in 1979 in an exchange and emigrated to Israel, where he directed the Russian-language daily Vesti. He kept diaries in prison that were smuggled out and published.
