Député allemand né à Worms le 14 janvier 1808, mort à Mannheim le 9 février 1879. Premier juif appelé par les autorités à siéger comme juré, à Mayence en 1847, il y fit instaurer, malgré l'opposition des orthodoxes, des offices synagogaux en allemand. Actif en politique, il fut l'un des chefs du parti démocrate en 1848, élu maire l'année suivante, puis envoyé en 1850 comme député à la Chambre haute de Hesse — une distinction rare pour un juif à l'époque — avant que le succès du parti réactionnaire en 1853 ne l'oblige à se retirer.
