Grammairien et commentateur russe né à Wilna en janvier 1821, mort à Varsovie en décembre 1892. Formé au Talmud puis à la yeshiva de Volojine, il vécut une trentaine d'années à Rossein, où il révéla le talent du poète Juda Löb Gordon, avant de séjourner à Tels (1867), Mohilev, Königsberg, puis Brest et Kovno, et de s'établir enfin à Varsovie. Il publia notamment « Shoshannim » (Königsberg, 1860), « Ha-Mesillot » (Wilna, 1875) et « Ha-Tirosh » (Varsovie, 1891), et fut considéré comme l'un des principaux défenseurs de l'orthodoxie dans la littérature hébraïque moderne.
