Historien russo-juif né à Mstislavl, dans le gouvernorat de Moguilev, en 1860, diplômé de l'école de district en 1877, Simon Doubnov s'installe en 1880 à Saint-Pétersbourg, où il devient collaborateur du « Russki Yevrei » puis, à partir de 1882, du « Voskhod », dont il dirige la rubrique critique dès 1883 ; ses premiers articles marquants portent sur Sabbataï Tsevi et sur les frankistes. Auteur d'une monographie fondée sur des sources inédites, l'« Histoire du hassidisme » (1888-93), il entreprend en 1891 de susciter chez les juifs russes l'intérêt pour leur propre histoire, publiant des articles réunis en volume à Saint-Pétersbourg (1891).
