Rabbin de Mulhouse, en Alsace, mort en juin 1870, Samuel Dreyfus compte parmi les premiers élèves matriculés de l'école rabbinique de Metz ; excellent hébraïsant et prédicateur, ambitionnant sans succès de devenir grand rabbin, il publie plusieurs ouvrages, collabore à « L'Univers Israélite » et fonde le mensuel « Le Lien », qui ne rencontre pas le succès et cesse rapidement de paraître.
