Homme politique français né à Paris le 19 août 1851, Ferdinand-Camille Dreyfus quitte ses études pour servir volontaire pendant la guerre franco-prussienne, dirige en 1873 « L'Avenir de la Sarthe » — lui valant cinq mois de prison pour opposition à MacMahon —, devient chef de bureau au sous-secrétariat des finances en 1879, puis éditeur de « La Lanterne » et conseiller municipal du Gros-Caillou en 1882, avant de fonder deux ans plus tard « Le Matin » ; il est élu député de la Seine en 1885, réélu en 1889 contre un boulangiste, et siège à l'extrême gauche. Il publie « L'Évolution des Mondes et des Sociétés » (1888) et « La Guerre Nécessaire » (1890), et cofonde « La Grande Encyclopédie ».
