Syndic des communautés juives d'Amsterdam puis de Londres au dix-septième siècle, né dans une grande ville d'Andalousie où il fut échevin et trésorier à vie des douanes et revenus royaux. Emprisonné et torturé par l'Inquisition avec sa femme et sa sœur (1627-32), il se réfugia ensuite à Bordeaux puis, en 1640, à Amsterdam, où il se lança dans le commerce brésilien ; la conquête portugaise de Pernambouc en 1654 le ruina. Chargé par Manassé ben Israël de négocier le retour des Juifs en Angleterre, il présenta une pétition à Cromwell et s'installa à Londres en 1663, où il devint président de la première synagogue.
