Poète hébreu russe né à Białystok le 3 avril 1856, Menahem Mendel Dolitzki quitte sa ville natale en 1880 pour Moscou, où il enseigne, puis émigre en 1892 aux États-Unis. Son premier grand poème satirique, publié séparément à Vienne en 1879, est suivi du roman « Betoḵ Leva'im » (Saint-Pétersbourg, 1884) et surtout de « Mi-Bayit umi-Ḥuṣ » (Vilna, 1891), considéré comme son chef-d'œuvre pour sa description des persécutions des juifs de Roumanie ; ses poèmes sont réunis pour la première fois en Amérique dans « Ḳol Shire Menaḥem » (New York, 1895) et « Shire Menaḥem » (1899), tandis qu'il écrit aussi en yiddish et dirige, de décembre 1897 à septembre 1898, la revue « Die Zeit » à New York.
