Historien et écrivain politique allemand, défenseur des juifs et ami de Moses Mendelssohn, né à Lemgo le 11 décembre 1751 et mort près de Nordhausen le 29 mai 1820, Christian Wilhelm von Dohm publie en 1781, à la suggestion de Mendelssohn, un ouvrage en deux volumes sur l'émancipation des juifs, « Ueber die Bürgerliche Verbesserung der Juden » (Berlin), plaidant pour leur égalité politique au nom de l'humanité ; salué par les communautés de Berlin, Halberstadt et Surinam, l'ouvrage suscite des critiques qui poussent Mendelssohn à préciser ses vues dans la préface de la traduction par Marcus Herz du « Vindiciæ Judæorum » de Menasseh ben Israël.
