Hébraïsant et exégète russe né à Pinsk le 17 octobre 1843 et mort à New York le 14 janvier 1900, Abraham Baer Dobsewitch écrit dès treize ans un commentaire du Cantique des Cantiques, s'installe en 1861 à Ekaterinoslav comme professeur d'hébreu, puis en 1874 à Kiev comme précepteur des fils de Brodski, avant d'émigrer aux États-Unis en 1891. Son œuvre principale, le « Ha-Meṣaref » (Odessa, 1870), rassemble des interprétations rationalistes de l'aggada ; il publie ensuite « Be-Ḥada Maḥeta » (Cracovie, 1888) et « Lo Dubbim we-lo Ya'ar » (Berditchev, 1890), critiques dirigées contre Shatzkes et Weissberg, et poursuit son activité littéraire aux États-Unis.
