Soldat beni-israël né près de Bombay vers 1830, Abraham Samuel Divekar s'engage le 1er mars 1851 dans le dix-neuvième régiment d'infanterie indigène, promu jemadar le 1er janvier 1872 puis soubadar le 10 septembre 1878 ; présent aux batailles de Multan, du Gujarat et du Pendjab, décoré d'une médaille et de deux agrafes, il participe aussi à la guerre d'Afghanistan (1878-80), où il perd le bras droit à la bataille de Deh Khoja le 16 août 1880, et reçoit une nouvelle médaille pour sa bravoure.
