Rabbin russe né à Grodno le 10 décembre 1818 et mort à Jérusalem le 22 janvier 1898, Joshua Löb Diskin officie successivement à Łomża, Meseritz, Minsk, Kovno, Sklow et enfin Brest-Litovsk, d'où son surnom de « Der Brisker Rov » ; autorité rabbinique reconnue, comparé à Akiva Eiger, il ne recule devant aucune décision qu'il juge juste — au point d'être contraint de quitter Kovno, puis, en 1877, Brest-Litovsk après un jugement défavorable aux autorités civiles. Installé à Jérusalem, il interdit en 1889, année sabbatique, la culture de la terre en Palestine, fonde un orphelinat et la yeshiva Ohel Moshe, et lutte sans relâche contre les réformateurs et les missionnaires anglais.
