Juriste russe né à Ponevej en février 1843, diplômé de l'université de Moscou en 1867, Marc Lvovitch Dillon gravit les échelons du secrétariat du Sénat de 1868 à 1874, puis occupe divers postes judiciaires dans les cours de circuit de Perm, Simbirsk et Kazan de 1874 à 1896, fait chevalier de l'ordre d'Anne en 1883 et conseiller d'État en 1893 ; sa religion lui interdisant tout avancement, il démissionne de la magistrature, mais une exception faite en sa faveur en 1896 lui permet d'exercer comme avocat à Saint-Pétersbourg, où une attaque de paralysie, survenue en 1898 en pleine audience à la Cour suprême, le contraint à se retirer en Allemagne puis à Montreux.
