Hébraïsant et instituteur de sourds-muets né à Nikolsburg, en Moravie, le 20 mars 1813 et mort à Vienne le 1er mai 1899, collectionneur de livres hébreux, Joël Deutsch entre en 1844 comme enseignant à l'institut autrichien pour sourds-muets fondé à Nikolsburg, en devient directeur lorsqu'il déménage à Vienne en 1852, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'à sa retraite en 1888 ; décoré en 1859 et titré « Kaiserlicher Rath » en 1869, il forme des élèves qui deviendront enseignants à New York, à Londres et à Budapest. Il publie notamment « Religionslehre für Israel. Taubstumme » et « Biblische Geschichte für Israel. Taubstumme » (Vienne, 1863).
