Avocat, érudit et auteur américain né le 3 février 1833 à Zirke, dans la province de Posen, Lewis Naphtali Dembitz commence en 1853 la pratique du droit au barreau du Kentucky, à Louisville ; délégué à la Convention républicaine de 1860, adjoint au procureur de la ville de 1884 à 1888, il rédige en 1888 la première loi de vote australien adoptée aux États-Unis. Auteur de « Kentucky Jurisprudence » (1890), attaché au judaïsme orthodoxe, il siège en 1878 à la commission du Hebrew Union College et préside en 1898 une convention orthodoxe ; il publie aussi « Jewish Services in Synagogue and Home » (1898) et révise l'Exode et le Lévitique pour la Jewish Publication Society.
