Voyageur et archéologue né en 1812 et mort à Florence le 6 janvier 1882, Nathan Davis passe de longues années en Afrique du Nord, converti au christianisme dès sa jeunesse ; il édite en 1852 le « Hebrew Christian Magazine » et devient pasteur non-conformiste, puis conduit de 1856 à 1858, pour le British Museum, des fouilles à Carthage et Utique, où il met au jour mosaïques romaines et inscriptions phéniciennes. Il publie notamment « Tunis » (Malte, 1841), « A Voice from North Africa » (1844), « Evenings in My Tent » (1854) et « Carthage and Her Remains » (1861).
