English educator and author born in London in 1830, trained at the Jews' Free School where he becomes master of talmud-torah then director of the Gates of Hope School of Sephardic Jews, Myer David Davis directed from 1873 to 1875 the « Jewish World » before devoting himself, alongside private lessons, to unpublished archives of the history of Jews in England before their expulsion of 1290; his collection of extracts of Latin and Hebrew documents is published by the Anglo-Jewish Historical Exhibition of 1887 under the title « Shetaroth: Hebrew Deeds of English Jews » (London, 1888).

DAVIS, MYER DAVID

Pédagogue et écrivain anglais; né à Londres en 1830. Il reçut son éducation à la Jews' Free School, où il devint finalement maître de Talmud Torah. Par la suite, il fut directeur de la Gates of Hope School des Juifs espagnols et portugais. Pendant deux ans (1873-1875), il fut rédacteur en chef du "Jewish World." Après cela, gagnant sa vie par des leçons particulières, il consacra ses loisirs à la recherche parmi les archives inédites de l'histoire des Juifs d'Angleterre avant l'expulsion. Il a constitué une collection incomparable d'extraits des documents en latin et en hébreu antérieurs à 1290, qui fut publiée par l'Anglo-Jewish Historical Exhibition de 1887 sous le titre "Shetaroth: Hebrew Deeds of English Jews" (Londres, 1888).
