Davis, James

English dramatist and journalist born around 1848, James Davis (known as Owen Hall) obtained his law degree from University College London in 1869, practiced as a solicitor (1874-86) before turning to journalism, edited the society weekly « The Bat » (1885-87) then held an assistant editorial position with Galignani's « Messenger » in Paris (1888-90), and unsuccessfully ran for election in 1890 in the Conservative interest in Dundalk. He is the author of several successful comic operas, including « A Gaiety Girl », « An Artist's Model », « The Geisha », « A Greek Slave » and « Florodora », and has directed since 1899 the weekly « The Phœnix ».

Auteur dramatique et journaliste anglais ; né vers 1848. Il reçut son éducation à University College, Londres, et obtint le diplôme de bachelor of laws en 1869. Après avoir consacré quelques années à la pratique du droit comme solicitor (1874-86), il l'abandonna pour se tourner vers le journalisme. Il fut rédacteur en chef et propriétaire d'un journal mondain, "The Bat" (1885-87), et rédacteur en chef adjoint du "Messenger" de Galignani à Paris (1888-90). Pendant un certain temps, Davis s'intéressa à la politique, contestant Dundalk dans l'intérêt conservateur aux élections de 1890. Il est l'auteur de plusieurs opéras comiques qui ont eu un énorme succès, parmi lesquels "A Gaiety Girl," "An Artist's Model," "The Geisha," "A Greek Slave," et "Florodora." Depuis 1899, il a dirigé un journal hebdomadaire, "The Phænix."
