Philosophe et conférencier né de parents presbytériens à Deer, près d'Aberdeen, en Écosse, le 25 octobre 1840 et mort à Montréal le 14 septembre 1900, Thomas Davidson, diplômé de l'université d'Aberdeen en 1860, enseigne et voyage en Angleterre, en Écosse et en Amérique, maîtrisant sept langues anciennes et modernes. Fondateur de la Fabian Society de Londres, il se fait surtout connaître à l'Educational Alliance de New York par ses conférences de sociologie destinées à de jeunes juifs, qu'il voulait réunir en un « Breadwinners' College », projet interrompu par sa mort prématurée. Il laisse les « Fragments of Parmenides » (1869) et « The Parthenon Frieze and Other Essays » (1882).
