Publiciste et traducteur russe né à Kopyl, dans le gouvernorat de Minsk, en 1855, Léon Davidsohn, formé dès l'enfance au Talmud et à l'hébreu, écrit des vers hébreux dès neuf ans, étudie à la yeshiva de Mir puis de Karelitz sous son oncle Isaac Jehiel, se fait ordonner rabbin à quinze ans avant de s'installer à Minsk pour étudier le russe, puis à Varsovie, où il obtient son doctorat en médecine en 1888. Rallié à la littérature hébraïque après avoir plaidé dans « Ha-Ḳol » pour la fondation d'une école de science juive, il traduit en russe puis en polonais des œuvres d'Abramovitch et exerce la médecine à Prużana tout en continuant d'écrire pour la presse hébraïque.
