Dutch mathematician born in Amsterdam on September 23, 1900 into a Jewish family (parents Abraham van Dantzig and Bertha de Kadt, both Jewish). Known in topology for the construction of the solenoid; professor at Delft (1938) and then Amsterdam (1946). After the war he devoted himself to probability and was consulted by the Delta committee after the 1953 flood. Member of the Royal Netherlands Academy (1949).
