Journaliste et écrivain autrichien né à Weisskirchen, en Moravie, le 6 février 1859, orphelin de père dès l'âge de sept ans, Jacob Julius David entre en 1878 à l'université de Vienne pour étudier la philologie et ne parvient, après des années de privations, à passer son doctorat qu'en 1890, se consacrant ensuite entièrement à la littérature. Poète, nouvelliste, dramaturge et romancier, il publie notamment « Das Blut », « Gedichte » et « Probleme » (Dresde, 1892), le drame « Hagar's Sohn », joué au Landestheater de Vienne le 20 janvier 1891, et « Am Wege Sterben » (Vienne, 1900) ; depuis 1891, il collabore au « Montags-Revue ».
