Born in Sfax in 1919 in a family of Jewish merchants, baccalauréat at Lycée Lyautey in Casablanca, graduate of Saint-Cyr (1939-1940). Excluded from the army in 1941 by the Vichy Jewish statute, he resumed service at the Liberation. Captain during the Algerian War, he theorized counterinsurgency in two works that became classics.
