Violoniste et pédagogue né à Hambourg le 19 janvier 1810 et mort subitement le 19 juillet 1873 près de Kloster, en Suisse, Ferdinand David débute comme virtuose au Gewandhaus de Leipzig en 1825. Membre de l'orchestre du Königsstädtisches Theater de Berlin en 1827-1828, où il rencontre Mendelssohn, il devient premier violon du quatuor du baron von Liphardt à Dorpat, dont il épouse la fille, puis, lorsque Mendelssohn dirige les concerts du Gewandhaus en 1835, son maître de concert, poste qu'il garde jusqu'à sa mort, surtout après la création du Conservatoire en 1843. Il édite l'essentiel du répertoire classique du violon et forme Joachim et Wilhelmj.
