Rabbin d'Avignon au XVIe siècle, Maestro David d'Arles intervient dans une controverse casuistique qui agite les rabbins de Provence, d'Italie et de Palestine, après que les frères Isaac et Jacob Gard, rabbins de L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, eurent autorisé, par erreur de lecture de l'« Eben ha-'Ezer », un mariage en réalité interdit. Avec son gendre Boniaquet de la Roque et le soutien d'Isaac ben Immanuel de Lattes de Bologne, il s'oppose à cette décision et en appelle à Joseph Caro, qui, avec son collège rabbinique, lui donne raison et prononce, en 1560 puis en 1562, l'excommunication d'Isaac Gard.
