Major modernist Yiddish prose writer, revealed after 1905. His novel Nokh Alemen (1913) was hailed as a masterpiece depicting the decline of Jewish bourgeoisie in the shtetls. He lived in Berlin and later joined the USSR; arrested in 1949, he was executed on August 12, 1952 during the 'Night of the Murdered Poets', then rehabilitated posthumously in 1955.
