Grand prosateur moderniste yiddish, révélé après 1905. Son roman Nokh Alemen (1913) est salué comme un chef-d'œuvre décrivant le déclin de la bourgeoisie juive des shtetls. Il vécut à Berlin puis rejoignit l'URSS ; arrêté en 1949, il fut fusillé le 12 août 1952 lors de la « Nuit des poètes assassinés », puis réhabilité à titre posthume en 1955.
