Sephardic exile from Spain (1492), he settled in Cairo where he was appointed rabbinical chief (Nagid/Hakham Bashi) of Egypt, a position he held for some forty years; his yeshiva notably trained Betsalel Ashkenazi and Isaac Louria. Around age ninety, he distributed his fortune to the poor and settled in Safed, sitting on the rabbinical court presided over by Joseph Karo. He left more than 3,000 responsa.
