Considéré comme l'un des plus grands poètes juifs marocains et une figure majeure de la poésie liturgique séfarade. Disciple et gendre de Rabbi Mordekhaï Berdugo, il parcourut les communautés du Maroc et se rendit à Gibraltar où ses poèmes furent bien accueillis. Son recueil « Tehila le-David » est le premier livre de poésie d'un auteur marocain jamais imprimé ; ses piyyoutim, diffusés par les émissaires (chadarim), ont inspiré de nombreux chanteurs marocains.
