Born in Mannheim in a German Jewish family, he opened his gallery in Paris in 1907 (28 rue Vignon) and became the principal dealer and publisher of Picasso, Braque, Derain and Juan Gris — the « four musketeers » of cubism. Exiled to Switzerland during the First World War, he wrote Der Weg zum Kubismus (« The Rise of Cubism »), published in 1920, a foundational text of cubism theory (distinction between analytical and synthetic cubism).
