Né à Mannheim dans une famille juive allemande, il ouvre en 1907 sa galerie à Paris (28 rue Vignon) et devient le principal marchand et éditeur de Picasso, Braque, Derain et Juan Gris — les « quatre mousquetaires » du cubisme. Exilé en Suisse pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il y rédige Der Weg zum Kubismus (« La Montée du cubisme »), publié en 1920, texte fondateur de la théorie du cubisme (distinction cubisme analytique / synthétique).
