Israeli historian, specialist in the history of Italian Jews, particularly of the Paduan Renaissance. Born in Milan in 1926 to an Italian Jewish family bearing the patronym Carpi (derived from the city of Carpi in Emilia), son of an artillery officer and revisionist Zionist activist. The family fled Italy during the German invasion of 1943; Daniel joined the Allied forces and emigrated to Palestine in 1945, settling in Sdei Eliyahu, and participated in Israel's War of Independence. Ph.D. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1967) with a thesis on the Jews of Padua in the Renaissance, he taught at Tel Aviv University from 1962 to 1994, where he headed the Department of Jewish History and served as dean of the Faculty of Humanities. Author of numerous works on Italian Jewish communities of the Renaissance and editor of Ze'ev Jabotinsky's correspondence, he was honored by the Italian Republic for his research.
