Exilarque de Bagdad dans la seconde moitié du XIIe siècle, Daniel ben Salomon, dit ben Ḥasdai, appartient à une famille qui se réclame du roi David et vit dans un grand faste, évoqué par Abraham ibn Ezra, de passage à Bagdad au milieu du siècle, dans son commentaire à Zacharie xii, 7. On ne sait rien de son activité politique ou littéraire, sinon qu'il approuve, sans s'y engager ouvertement, l'opposition à Maïmonide menée par Samuel b. Ali de Bagdad. N'ayant pas eu d'enfants, il voit à sa mort l'exilarchat transféré à Mossoul, où deux prétendants, David ben Hodaya et Samuel, se le disputent.
