Avocat, écrivain et journaliste polonais né le 20 juin 1801 et mort à Londres le 31 janvier 1867, Jan Czynski, fils de parents juifs convertis au catholicisme avant sa naissance, se fait le défenseur zélé des juifs. Avocat à Lublin, il participe à la révolution polonaise de 1830 puis s'installe à Paris en 1832, où il collabore au Comité national polonais aux côtés du prince Adam Czartoryski et de Lafayette, avant de s'établir à Londres. Il publie notamment « Le Réveil d'Israël » (Paris, 1847), « Le Fils de la Juive » (1848) et « Israël en Pologne » (1861), et dirige le journal « La Pologne ».
