Général polonais né en 1599 et mort au village de Sokolovka, en Volhynie, le 12 février 1664, Stefan Czarniecki se distingue dans les guerres contre la Suède et la Russie (1656-61). À la différence de Wiśniowiecki, protecteur des juifs pendant le soulèvement cosaque, il se montre d'une grande dureté à leur égard : après la révolte cosaque de 1648, il combat aux côtés du prince Potocki contre Chmielnicki, puis, se retirant devant les Suédois, dévaste le pays et fait tuer des centaines de juifs dans plusieurs communautés, notamment à Cracovie en 1656.
