Procurateur romain de Judée (48-52), Ventidius Cumanus doit réprimer trois soulèvements : une bousculade meurtrière dans le Temple de Jérusalem provoquée par un soldat romain, le pillage de villages après l'agression de l'officier Stéphanus près de Beth-Horon, puis un conflit entre Samaritains et Judéens déclenché par le meurtre d'un pèlerin galiléen. Convoqué à Rome avec d'autres responsables à l'issue de cette dernière affaire, il est banni par l'empereur Claude.
