Italian poet of Jewish origin born in the ghetto of Rome in 1868, regarded as the greatest author in Judeo-Romanesque dialect (nicknamed the « Gioachino Belli » of Roman Jewry). His sonnets paint, with affectionate irony, Roman Jews at the passage from ghetto to emancipation (after 1870). First scholar to study the Judeo-Romanesque language, he translated medieval and 16th-century texts as well as Dante and Boccaccio. Died in 1935, before the racial laws of 1938.
