Éducateur et théologien allemand, né à Mayence le 16 mai 1789, mort à Francfort-sur-le-Main le 5 août 1842. Formé de façon traditionnelle aux études talmudiques, il s'ouvre au savoir profane à seize ans pendant l'occupation française, étudie les mathématiques et fonde une école juive à Mayence, dont il devient le principal ; nommé en 1825 enseignant au Philanthropin de Francfort, il y travaille aux côtés d'I. M. Jost à la réforme du judaïsme et rédige un Shulḥan 'Aruk destiné à concilier le Talmud avec les idées modernes, avant de plaider pour un retour au mosaïsme pur. Il dirige avec Jost, durant ses deux dernières années, la revue hébraïque Zion.
