Compositeur et chef d'orchestre anglais d'origine sépharade, né à Naples le 4 février 1810, mort à Brighton le 29 avril 1884. Formé par son père Pasquale Costa, son grand-père Tritto Costa et Zingarelli, il se rend en Angleterre en 1829, y dirige dès 1831 au Her Majesty's Theatre, et se fait naturaliser britannique en 1839 ; il dirige ensuite les concerts de la Philharmonic Society en 1846, le Royal Italian Opera en 1847, la Sacred Harmonic Society en 1849 et les festivals Haendel en 1857. Anobli à Windsor le 14 avril 1868, il compose de nombreux opéras et oratorios, dont Malek Adhel (1837), Don Carlos (1844) et l'oratorio Naaman (1864).
