Poète néerlandais, né le 14 janvier 1798 à Amsterdam, mort dans cette ville le 28 avril 1860, fils de Daniel da Costa, parent d'Uriel Acosta. Formé à l'école latine de 1806 à 1811, il se lie par son maître d'hébreu Moses Lemans au grand poète Bilderdijk, qui supervise son éducation ; il part en 1817 pour Leyde, où il obtient son doctorat de droit en 1818 puis de philosophie en 1821, avant de se convertir au christianisme avec sa cousine et épouse Hannah Belmonte. Reconnu comme le successeur de Bilderdijk parmi les poètes néerlandais, il publie notamment Israel en de Volken (Haarlem, 1848-49).
